Dr. Goldman is a highly regarded emergency physician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and the host of the CBC’s award-winning radio show White Coat, Black Art, where he takes listeners behind the scenes of hospitals and doctors’ offices. This will be his first appearance in Winnipeg to discuss his newest book, The Secret Language of Doctors.
“Zooming In is the Rady JCC’s preeminent lecture series focusing on contemporary issues in Jewish life. Dr. Goldman has a strong following and I know those attending will find him to be insightful and thought provoking.” says Gayle Waxman, Executive Director, Rady JCC.
The Secret Language of Doctors cracks the coded words doctors use in hospital elevators and hallways. Often funny and always revealing, The Secret Language of Doctors reveals deep flaws in modern medical culture, and how to fix them.
“I’ve been an observer of the culture of medicine for my whole career,” Goldman says in an interview with the Toronto Star, “I try to get inside my colleagues’ heads and hearts, and explain to the world why they act the way they do and what it means. Look, health professionals are among the most ethically grounded people on this planet, but they’re human,” says Goldman. “I want the world to understand the pressures of the system, how it depresses us and how it can jazz us as well.”
Dr. Goldman is the author of the bestselling book The Night Shift: Real Life in the ER, which takes readers through giddying heights and crashing lows as Goldman works through a typical night shift in one of Canada’s busiest ERs. Dr. Goldman has worked as a health reporter for The National, CBC Television’s flagship news program, for CBC-TV’s The Health Show, and served as senior production executive during the launch year of Discovery Health Channel, Canada’s only 24-hour channel devoted to health programming.
A registered charity, the Rady JCC is open to all and has served the Jewish and general community for 95 years, providing the best in Jewish culture, fitness and wellness programs for all stages of life.
